NATIONAL MEMORIAL CEMETERY OF AZ
LUKE AIR FORCE BASE
Luke Air Force Base is an active-duty training base with a population of about 7,500 military members and 15,000 family members. Named after the WWI flying ace and Phoenix native, Lieutenant Frank Luke Jr., the first aviator to receive the Medal of Honor. The base is located 7 miles west of Glendale's central business district and about 15 miles west of Phoenix. Luke Air Force Base's mission is to train the world's greatest F-16 fighter pilots and maintainers, while deploying mission ready war-fighters. One of the main parts of the base is the Barry I VI. Goldwater Air Force Range, consisting of 57,000 cubic miles of airspace where pilots practice air-to-air maneuvers and simulate ground battlefield engagement. This training base is located southwest of Luke Air Force Base, between Yuma and Tucson, south of Interstate 8. Since 2012, Luke Air Force Base has been the permanent home of Naval Operational Support Center, supporting over 750 Navy Reservists in 16 Navy Reserve Units.
Established in 1978, the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona is located in northern Phoenix and encompasses about 225 acres of land. As of 2005, the cemetery had over 43,000 interments and isn't expected to hit capacity until the year 2030. In 1999, the Department of improvements adding three new committal shelters, a visitor center, founders place, assembly area, and a maintenance building. There are 18 monuments and memorials located in the National Memorial Cemetery of AZ, most arranged along a memorial walkway. Two of the cemetery's most unique memorials include the Eternal Flame Monument and the World War II Submarine Torpedo Monument.
